Most private banks require a monthly average balance (MAB) — typically ₹10,000–₹15,000 in metro branches — and charge a penalty if you fall short. Many public-sector banks have dropped these charges: SBI since March 2020, and Canara Bank, PNB, Bank of Baroda, Central Bank, Indian Bank, Union Bank and IOB (select accounts) during 2025.

ICICI Bank’s 2025 change
For savings accounts opened on/after 1 Aug 2025, ICICI initially raised MAB to ₹50,000 metro/urban, ₹25,000 semi-urban, ₹10,000 rural; after backlash it revised this (13 Aug 2025) to ₹15,000 metro/urban, ₹7,500 semi-urban, ₹2,500 rural. Existing accounts keep earlier limits (₹10,000 metro/urban). Penalty: 6% of shortfall or ₹500, whichever lower, plus GST.
RBI rules on minimum-balance charges
- The bank must tell you by SMS/email/letter when your balance falls below the minimum, and give one month to restore it before charging.
- Charges must be proportional to the shortfall (a percentage of the shortfall or slab-based), not a flat heavy fee.
- The penalty must not turn your balance negative.
- Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) and PMJDY accounts have no minimum balance.
